Calculate plane area or total surface area for common shapes, with separate dimension labels for rectangles, circles, cubes and other solids. Plane area measures a two-dimensional region, such as a rectangle drawn on paper or a circular floor. Total surface area adds the outer faces of a three-dimensional solid. Select the correct shape before typing dimensions because the required measurements change. A flat rectangle has area length times width. A rectangular box needs a height as well, and its total surface includes six faces. Both results use square units, but they describe different objects.

Formula and methodology
Rectangle A=lw; square A=s²; circle A=πr²; ellipse A=πab; triangle A=bh/2; trapezoid A=(a+b)h/2; box SA=2(lw+lh+wh); cube SA=6s²; sphere SA=4πr²; closed cylinder SA=2πr(r+h); closed cone SA=πr(r+√(r²+h²)).
The calculator applies the disclosed heuristic to values entered on this device. It does not load private admissions data or claim to reproduce an institution's review process.
Worked calculation example
A cube with edge 3 has total surface area 54 square units. A rectangle 3 by 4 has plane area 12 square units; these answer different questions.
How to interpret your result
This method applies only within the stated scope. Euclidean shapes only, with positive dimensions in one length unit. Cannot solve missing diagrams, infer area from perimeter alone or produce surveyed land boundaries. The worked scenarios below identify the measurements and conventions needed to interpret the displayed output.

| Box 2 by 3 by 4 | 52 square units including all six faces. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a diameter in a radius field.
- Using slanted triangle side as perpendicular height.
- Treating closed-cylinder surface as the area of an open container.
Reproduce the equation shown on this page using the same entered values. A cube with edge 3 has total surface area 54 square units. A rectangle 3 by 4 has plane area 12 square units; these answer different questions. Keep input units and the selected method with any recorded result. Check unusual measurements rather than relying on extra displayed decimal places.
Euclidean shapes only, with positive dimensions in one length unit. Cannot solve missing diagrams, infer area from perimeter alone or produce surveyed land boundaries. What can affect the result?
Radius, axes and perpendicular heights
Circle, cylinder, cone and sphere modes take radius, which is half the measured diameter. Ellipse mode takes two semi-axes, each half of the full width along its axis. Triangle and parallelogram modes need perpendicular height rather than a slanted edge. Trapezoid mode uses two parallel sides and the perpendicular separation between them. A side length can look like a height in a diagram while measuring a different quantity; inspect the right-angle marker before entry.
Closed solids and exposed surfaces
Cylinder mode includes both circular bases, while cone mode includes its circular base. These are closed-solid totals. An open container, uncovered pipe or painted wall requires selecting only the relevant surfaces. For a cylinder with one open end, subtract one circular area from the closed total. A hollow tube has additional internal surfaces and does not use the closed-cylinder total as its exposed area. The volume calculator handles tube volume with separate inner and outer radii.
Irregular figures and land area
Divide a composite flat figure into non-overlapping rectangles, triangles, trapezoids or circles, calculate each part, and add the areas. Subtract openings using the same units. A perimeter alone does not uniquely determine area unless enough shape information is supplied. This calculator cannot infer an unseen image or property boundary from a search phrase. Land surveying, curved boundaries and legal acreage require actual measurements and an appropriate boundary model.
Privacy and browser processing
Values entered on this page are processed in the current browser session. SolvePilot does not require an account and does not receive the values entered into the calculator. Refreshing or closing the page clears the working values unless the browser itself restores a previous session. Avoid entering identifying or account information because the calculation needs summary values only.
Accuracy and verification
Accuracy depends first on input quality. Confirm definitions, scales, dates and source information before entering a value. Keep an independent record of any result used for planning because this page does not create an official statement or retain a calculation history.

Frequently asked questions
What is total surface area?+
It is the sum of all outer faces or curved outer surfaces of the stated solid. The word total includes the bases for closed cylinder and cone modes here. If a question asks for lateral area, exclude bases according to the geometry of the object.
How do I find area of a rectangle?+
Multiply its length by its width after converting both measurements to the same unit. A 12 ft by 10 ft rectangle has 120 ft² of area. Do not multiply feet by inches without converting one measurement first.
Does a square have volume?+
A square is a flat shape and has area. A cube is a solid and has volume. If a worksheet loosely says square volume, identify whether it actually means a cube or a rectangular prism before choosing a formula.
Can I find surface area from a figure below?+
You need the figure and its measurements. This page does not receive a missing diagram, so it cannot invent dimensions. Identify each face, select the appropriate shape and use the lengths given by the actual question.
Why does converting feet to inches change area by 144?+
Each length gains a factor of 12 and area multiplies two lengths, so square feet convert to square inches by 12², or 144. Volume uses three dimensions and therefore has a different conversion factor.
