Estimate roof surface area from horizontal plan dimensions and roof pitch, then add an explicit waste allowance for material coverage. Horizontal plan area is the roof’s footprint as seen from above. Sloped surface is longer than the corresponding horizontal projection, so the slope multiplier increases the coverage estimate. Enter the projected roof dimensions including overhangs, not just the building’s wall-to-wall footprint. A gable roof with a uniform pitch can use the complete projection: both halves together cover the full plan area, so do not multiply the complete footprint by two again.

Formula and methodology
Uniform-pitch roof area = horizontal plan length × width × √(1 + (rise/12)²). One roofing square is 100 ft².
The calculator applies the displayed arithmetic to the values entered on this device. It does not silently load a local tax rate, currency conversion or commercial assumption.
Worked calculation example
A 40 by 30 ft roof footprint at 6:12 pitch has approximately 1,341.64 ft² of sloped surface; 10% waste increases coverage to 1,475.80 ft².
How to interpret your result
This method applies only within the stated scope. Uniform-pitch geometry only. No structural, waterproofing, access-safety, code or product-layout assessment. Waste is user supplied. The worked scenarios below identify the measurements and conventions needed to interpret the displayed output.

Scenario comparison
| Scenario | What it shows |
|---|---|
| 40 by 30 ft at 6:12 | approximately 1,341.64 ft² of roof surface. |
| Same roof with 10% waste | approximately 1,475.80 ft² of purchasing coverage. |
| 40 by 30 ft at zero pitch | 1,200 ft², equal to the horizontal projection. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Doubling a complete gable footprint again.
- Entering pitch angle in degrees instead of rise per 12.
- Omitting overhang projection or using one pitch for mixed roof sections.
Reproduce the equation shown on this page using the same entered values. A 40 by 30 ft roof footprint at 6:12 pitch has approximately 1,341.64 ft² of sloped surface; 10% waste increases coverage to 1,475.80 ft². Keep input units and the selected method with any recorded result. Check unusual measurements rather than relying on extra displayed decimal places.

Pitch entered as rise per twelve
The pitch field is rise for twelve units of horizontal run. For a 6:12 roof, enter 6; do not enter the angle in degrees or the decimal ratio 0.5. The multiplier follows a right triangle whose horizontal leg is one and vertical leg is pitch divided by twelve. Roof angle and pitch describe related geometry, but their numeric inputs are different. A zero pitch produces a multiplier of one, corresponding to a flat geometric surface.
Multiple slopes and complex roofs
The whole-footprint method assumes one pitch. When sections have different pitches, measure each section’s horizontal projection, calculate it independently and add the sloped areas. Roof valleys, dormers, hips and intersecting planes make takeoffs more complex. Avoid counting overlaps twice. A contractor drawing or measured takeoff is more reliable than treating every house as a simple rectangle. This tool estimates area and cannot reconstruct a roof from a street address or photograph.
Waste and purchasing units
Waste is an explicit percentage added after geometric area. It represents a purchasing allowance, not extra physical roof surface. The required allowance depends on layout, cuts, product and detailing, so enter a value agreed with your supplier or installer. Roofing squares are coverage units of 100 square feet; they are not a guaranteed number of bundles. Use the selected product’s coverage per bundle or sheet and round the final order to whole packs separately.
Privacy and browser processing
Values entered on this page are processed in the current browser session. SolvePilot does not require an account and does not receive the values entered into the calculator. Refreshing or closing the page clears the working values unless the browser itself restores a previous session. Avoid entering identifying or account information because the calculation needs summary values only.
Accuracy and verification
Accuracy depends first on input quality. Confirm definitions, scales, dates and source information before entering a value. Keep an independent record of any result used for planning because this page does not create an official statement or retain a calculation history.
Limits of this estimate
Uniform-pitch geometry only. No structural, waterproofing, access-safety, code or product-layout assessment. Waste is user supplied.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate roof area from a footprint?+
Multiply plan length by plan width and then by the pitch multiplier. This works for a consistent pitch over a measured projection. Include the roof’s overhang projection in dimensions and calculate differently pitched sections individually rather than averaging pitches.
Does a gable roof need twice the footprint?+
No when the entered footprint covers both slopes. Each half covers half the horizontal projection, and multiplying the complete footprint by the slope multiplier already includes both sides. Doubling that total would count the same roof twice.
What is a roofing square?+
One roofing square is 100 square feet of surface coverage. The displayed roofing-square figure is before waste. Materials sold by bundles have product-specific coverage, so convert the waste-adjusted total using the packaging specification and round to complete packs.
Can this size solar panels?+
No. Total roof area does not determine usable solar layout. Obstructions, shade, access setbacks, module dimensions and structural suitability all matter. Use a solar layout method and a qualified installer for that separate question.
Can I measure the roof myself?+
Use existing plans or safe ground-based measurements where possible. This calculator is not advice to climb a roof. Steep surfaces and fragile roofing introduce fall hazards; professional measurement is appropriate when the required dimensions cannot be obtained safely.
