Calculate solid or water-container volume for boxes, cubes, cylinders, cones, spheres, ponds and hollow tubes, with litres and gallon conversions. Volume measures occupied three-dimensional space. A flat rectangle, square or circle has area rather than volume. Searches for rectangle volume normally mean a rectangular box; circle volume can mean a cylinder or sphere, which require different dimensions. Select the actual solid rather than applying a formula to a two-dimensional name. The changing field labels show whether the mode needs an edge, radius, length, height or depth.

Formula and methodology
Box V=lwh; cube V=s³; cylinder V=πr²h; cone V=πr²h/3; sphere V=4πr³/3; hollow tube V=π(R²−r²)L. US gallon=3.785411784 L; imperial gallon=4.54609 L.

Worked calculation example
A 10 ft by 5 ft by 3 ft box holds 150 ft³ geometrically, approximately 4,247.53 litres or 1,122.08 US gallons before displacement and freeboard.
How to interpret your result
This method applies only within the stated scope. Ideal geometry only. Pond results depend on representative average depth. Capacity excludes displacement and freeboard; no structural or chemical-treatment guidance. The worked scenarios below identify the measurements and conventions needed to interpret the displayed output.

Scenario comparison
| Scenario | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Box 2 by 3 by 4 m | 24 m³ or 24,000 litres. |
| Cube with 3 cm edge | 27 cm³, not 27 square centimetres. |
| Tube outer radius 2 m, inner radius 1 m, length 3 m | approximately 28.2743 m³ of annular volume. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a flat circle or square a volume-bearing solid.
- Using outside tank dimensions or deepest pond depth for water capacity.
- Using annular tube volume as liquid bore capacity.
Reproduce the equation shown on this page using the same entered values. A 10 ft by 5 ft by 3 ft box holds 150 ft³ geometrically, approximately 4,247.53 litres or 1,122.08 US gallons before displacement and freeboard. Keep input units and the selected method with any recorded result. Check unusual measurements rather than relying on extra displayed decimal places.
Ideal geometry only. Pond results depend on representative average depth. Capacity excludes displacement and freeboard; no structural or chemical-treatment guidance. What can affect the result?
Box and tank dimensions
For rectangular containers, use internal length, width and water depth. Outside dimensions include wall thickness and overstate capacity. Cylinder mode uses radius and height; divide a measured diameter by two before entry. Full geometric capacity assumes filling to the measured height. Actual usable water capacity should allow for freeboard, fittings, contents, sediment and safe operating limits. The output does not determine whether a container can bear the load of that water.
Pond average depth
Rectangular pond mode multiplies length, width and average depth, while round pond mode uses circular plan area and average depth. An irregular pond is not necessarily well represented by either shape. Measure depths at multiple representative points and use a defensible average rather than the deepest point. Banks, shelves and sloped bottoms can substantially reduce capacity. The result is a geometric estimate, not a surveyed pond model or a chemical-treatment recommendation.
Hollow tube and unit conversion
Hollow tube mode calculates the material or annular space between an outer and inner cylinder. The inner radius must be smaller than the outer radius. It is not the liquid bore capacity, which uses the inner radius alone in cylinder mode. Choose one length unit for every dimension. Litres and both gallon standards are then converted from the cubic result. US liquid gallons and imperial gallons differ, so compare the output using the same gallon definition as your source.
Privacy and browser processing
Values entered on this page are processed in the current browser session. SolvePilot does not require an account and does not receive the values entered into the calculator. Refreshing or closing the page clears the working values unless the browser itself restores a previous session. Avoid entering identifying or account information because the calculation needs summary values only.
Accuracy and verification
Accuracy depends first on input quality. Confirm definitions, scales, dates and source information before entering a value. Keep an independent record of any result used for planning because this page does not create an official statement or retain a calculation history.
Limits of this estimate
Ideal geometry only. Pond results depend on representative average depth. Capacity excludes displacement and freeboard; no structural or chemical-treatment guidance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the volume formula for a cube?+
Cube volume is edge length cubed. An edge of 3 cm gives 27 cm³. Surface area is different: six faces each of area 9 cm² total 54 cm². Choose volume for space inside the solid and surface area for its exterior coverage.
How do I find the volume of a box?+
Multiply length, width and height after converting all measurements to one unit. The unit is cubed because three dimensions are multiplied. For water capacity, use internal dimensions and the actual intended fill depth instead of external container dimensions.
Does a circle have volume?+
No. A circle is two-dimensional. A cylinder has circular cross-section and a height; a sphere is a different solid defined by radius. Identify the actual object before choosing a mode. The page deliberately does not claim a unique volume for an unspecified circle.
Is tube volume the water inside a pipe?+
Hollow tube mode gives the annular volume between two radii, such as the pipe wall material. To find the water capacity of the bore, use cylinder mode with the inner radius and the pipe length. Outer diameter should not be used as water diameter.
Which gallon result should I use?+
Use the gallon standard specified by the source or product. A US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 litres, while an imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres. Keeping both outputs visible avoids assuming that every tank specification uses the same unit.
