How this calculator helps

Convert millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards and international miles with an explicit unit selector. Enter one nonnegative length and explicitly select its original unit and requested destination. The converter supports eight linear units, including metric millimetres through kilometres and international inches through miles. It does not infer a unit from the size of a number or parse mixed feet-and-inches text. Matching source and destination units returns the original value and is a useful interface check.

How to use it

  1. 1

Choose the correct input basis for length conversion calculator and enter the values described below. The demonstration defaults are examples, not independently verified personal measurements.

  2. 2

Review convert through metres before submitting. Match the selected units and roles to the original source record, including any signs or percentage conventions.

  3. 3

Click Calculate result to submit the current inputs. Editing a field preserves the previous submitted output until you calculate again; the status message identifies that pending change.

  4. 4

Compare the labeled result with the worked example and independent verification checks. Review height and mixed measurements before copying it into another worksheet.

Formula and methodology

Destination value = input × metres-per-source-unit / metres-per-destination-unit. 1 in = 0.0254 m; 1 ft = 0.3048 m; 1 international mile = 1609.344 m.

The calculator applies the displayed arithmetic to the values entered on this device. It does not silently load a local tax rate, currency conversion or commercial assumption.

Worked calculation example

100 centimetres equals 1 metre, approximately 39.370079 inches or 3.280840 feet. Selecting inches to millimetres for a value of 1 returns 25.4 mm. The selectors control the direction, so converting 100 inches to centimetres instead gives 254 cm.

How to interpret your result

The foot and mile options use the international definitions, with one foot equal to 0.3048 metres and one mile equal to 1609.344 metres. Historical survey-foot records can use a different basis. A nautical mile is also a separate unit and is not an option. Identify the source convention before converting surveying, marine or historical data instead of assuming every label has the same meaning.

Mile check1 mi equals 1.609344 km.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Selecting conversion units in the wrong direction.
  • Reading decimal feet as mixed feet and inches.
  • Treating knots as kilometres or using linear factors for area.
How to verify this result

Convert the result back with the selectors reversed and compare with the original value. Check exact factor examples such as one inch to 25.4 mm and one foot to twelve inches. Use the metres row to catch a thousand-fold metric-prefix mistake. Preserve unrounded source values when another calculation needs the full available precision.

What can affect the result?

Select both units

Enter one nonnegative length and explicitly select its original unit and requested destination. The converter supports eight linear units, including metric millimetres through kilometres and international inches through miles. It does not infer a unit from the size of a number or parse mixed feet-and-inches text. Matching source and destination units returns the original value and is a useful interface check.

Convert through metres

Each supported unit has a metres-per-unit factor. Multiplying by the source factor gives metres; dividing by the destination factor completes the conversion. This shared reference prevents separate direction formulas from drifting apart. The factor row shows the number of destination units in one source unit. It is a linear ratio, so ten times the input always gives ten times the converted length.

International foot and mile

The foot and mile options use the international definitions, with one foot equal to 0.3048 metres and one mile equal to 1609.344 metres. Historical survey-foot records can use a different basis. A nautical mile is also a separate unit and is not an option. Identify the source convention before converting surveying, marine or historical data instead of assuming every label has the same meaning.

Length is not speed or area

Kilometres and miles measure distance; knots measure speed. A malformed search phrase involving kn is not treated as a kilometre label here. Area requires the square of a length factor, and volume requires its cube. This calculator converts linear lengths only. To calculate square footage or a solid’s volume, use the corresponding geometry tool with dimensions expressed in a consistent unit.

Height and mixed measurements

A height already expressed as a single decimal length can use this converter. For 5 ft 8 in, either enter 68 inches or use the feet-and-inches arithmetic page. Entering 5.8 feet does not mean five feet eight inches. The numeric ceiling is 10¹² in the selected source unit; outputs retain floating-point precision before display rounding. Keep the original unit when copying a result into another worksheet.

Privacy and browser processing

Values entered on this page are processed in the current browser session. SolvePilot does not require an account and does not receive the values entered into the calculator. Refreshing or closing the page clears the working values unless the browser itself restores a previous session. Avoid entering identifying or account information because the calculation needs summary values only.

Accuracy and verification

Accuracy depends first on input quality. Confirm definitions, scales, dates and source information before entering a value. Keep an independent record of any result used for planning because this page does not create an official statement or retain a calculation history.

Limits of this estimate

Important: Treat the result as a planning estimate. Confirm official requirements and consequential decisions with the relevant institution, authority or qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert mm to inches?+

Yes. Select millimetres as source and inches as destination. One inch is exactly 25.4 mm.

Can I enter five feet eight inches?+

Use 68 inches as one value or the separate mixed feet-and-inches calculator. Unit text is not parsed.

Are miles nautical miles?+

No. The option is the international statute mile, not a nautical mile or a speed unit.

Does it convert square feet?+

No. This page converts length. Area and volume need different powers of the conversion factor.

Why is a round trip slightly different?+

The displayed value is rounded. Re-entering that displayed value can lose digits compared with the internal calculation.
