How this calculator helps

Translate an advertised internet speed into an understandable download time. The calculator correctly distinguishes gigabytes from gigabits and applies an efficiency allowance for protocol overhead and normal network variation.

Formula and methodology

Seconds = file size in GB × 8,000 ÷ connection speed in Mbps ÷ efficiency. Eight bits equal one byte.

Worked calculation example

A 20 GB game contains roughly 160,000 megabits. On a 50 Mbps connection at 90% practical efficiency, it takes about 59 minutes.
